Question by Dave: walking a tight rope?
In the book, “The Secret” it states that it follows the “Law of Attraction”. To combat sickness…it states to see yourself as being whole and healed.

Fighting Breast Cancer requires one to follow through on treatments…the web site suggests not reading anything on the condition, but being unifomed does not seem right either.

So, how do you stay positive and think about being whole while fighting Breast Cancer?

Best answer:

Answer by lo_mcg
I haven’t read the book, so can’t comment on it.

But while it can’t do any harm to see yourself as being whole an healed, there isn’t any evidence that I’m aware of that it does any good either.

I’m not sure what website you’re referring to; not reading anything about your condition might work for some people; I know some people prefer not to know details of their cancer. I’m the opposite; when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I told all medical professionals I encountered ‘I want to know what you know’; Knowing the details of my own particular cancer – good or bad – was important to me, as was learning as much I could about breast cancer in general.

As for staying positive… positive thinking has no effect on cancer – not in preventing it, treating it, curing it or in any way affecting its progress.

I’ve never read or heard of a clinical trial ‘proving’ the efficacy of positive thinking on disease, though I’ve seen and heard many people claim that ‘studies show’ this is the case without being able to cite a single study when challenged.

These links provide some evidence to the contrary. The first is a report of a Dutch study of 9,700 women over 13 years. The study found that the development of breast cancer had no link with personality – no link with anxiety, anger, depression or optimism:

http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=86769

This research is a prospective study, ie at the start of the study no one had breast cancer and the women were followed for 13 years. Many studies of this kind are retrospective (asking people after they have had cancer if they were stressed, anxious etc – not reliable at all).

This next link is to a report in the British Medical Journal which pretty much explodes the theory that a ‘fighting spirit’ is associated with longer survival from cancer or that ‘hopelessness and helplessness’ means poorer outcomes. The researchers analysed existing studies from1979 onwards; their conclusion is:

‘There is little consistent evidence that psychological coping styles play an important part in survival from or recurrence of cancer. People with cancer should not feel pressured into adopting particular coping styles to improve survival or reduce the risk of recurrence.’

http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/325/7372/1066

Urging a seriously ill person to be, stay or think positive can be counter productive; it can make the person feel guilty and therefore worse because they just CAN’T feel as positive as everyone is urging them to be. That was certainly my experience

I was diagnosed with grade 3 stage 3 breast cancer, with 13 lymph nodes invovlved. Following surgery, chemo, radiotherapy and hormone treatments I am, almost 5 years after diagnosis, fit and well with no evidence of cancer at my routine check-up last month. So being the negative grouch that I was during treatment did me no harm!

Do you remember yourself in childhood? You had the same problems. Everybody has similar problems in when they are growing up. This process is full of stresses and clear happiness. The feelings in this time are deeper and stronger than when you become older. The difficulties seem to be insurmountable, the love seems to be eternal and so on. But the influence from the outer world on the personality of the child is extremely strong too. This may cause huge fluctuations in the behavior. When you were a child, you had to grow out of it and cope with yourself. But now you can help your kid with the difficult life period. Bach essences can be useful in different situations. Kids often behave in the wrong way from the point of view of their parents. But the reason is not in their evil soul but in the fact that such behavior allows them feeling better and brings some positive emotions. You can prevent your child from doing lots of silly things with the help of Bach essences.

Most of the parents hope that their children will be able to cope with their inner nature themselves, but they don’t always manage to do it. Even if you explain to your kid what’s wrong and what’s right, it doesn’t mean that he will stop doing wrong. He or she can realize it but behave wrong consciously because of the spirit of contradiction which is very close to their souls in this age. This is the thing that makes them feel better. Nevertheless, you can try to offer them some other methods to improve their emotional state and master the difficulties and problems they face. Try Bach essences to help.

Of course, each person is unique and you cannot compare your child with the others. That’s why any of the 38 Bach remedies can be of the great help. But there are several general symptoms you can see in the behavior of your child. They suffer from the similar problems and there are some definite Bach flowers to take.
Try Mimulus if you know the fears of your kid. It may be the excessive shyness, fear of the dark etc.

Vervain is good for those who are full of energy and cannot calm down when it is necessary. It is also helpful against overwhelming emotions.
Larch is useful for children who suffer from the lack of confidence. If they feel themselves abandoned or as though you pay little attention to them, this can help too.

Chicory can be used against the greed and toys possessiveness. At the same time explain your child that it’s wrong to be greedy and generous people can gain even more.
Walnut can be taken when your child changes the general life circle. E.g. you move to another city, change the school and so on.

Add two or three drops of the remedy to hot drinks so that the alcohol was evaporated. This will prevent your from feeling nervous.
In any case be sure to contact your child’s doctor and consult with him before giving the Bach remedies.

Before Dr. Bach developed his remedies, he tried different spheres of medicine. He became disappointed in the orthodox medical science almost immediately, although he worked as a surgeon and bacteriologist and was a rather good specialist. The next step to the pure natural essences was homeopathy. He started working on homeopathic remedies as he was sure that they were more effective and save than the common ones usually used in the hospitals. He believed that the effect of homeopathic treatment is gentler and the human body mustn’t be hurt in order to insert them and make them cure the disease. In his studies he got wonderful results but he was still unsatisfied as even homeopathic remedies appeared to have side effects. Nevertheless, a lot of scientists were interested in his research at that time.

When working with the homeopathic medicines, Bach discovered some new types of bacteria and therefore made even more significant contribution to bacteriology. Another achievement was the new general bacteria categorization.

Dr. Bach used his new classification in the homeopathic research. Thanks to it he created a new vaccine. As a rule this vaccine was used to clean the intestinal tract. Its great advantage was the absence of side effects. The human body stayed the same it was before but the health improved and in this way the treatment was performed. The patient was healed and no other inner organs were affected. The medicine provided the local effect. This discovery was very important for the further development of homeopathic approach. His bacteria classification also included the individual traits of character and the peculiarities of the personality. As a result he treated his patients individually and chose the treatment for them according to their character too. The results were amazing.

After that Bach started the work on other remedies with no side effects. He investigated the fruits, cereals and other natural food in order to include them in the remedies and make them easier to digest by the human. Another usage for these additives was the try to reduce the harmful components of the medicines such as toxins, pathogens etc. He published several articles on the results of his investigation, on the improvements which can be made in the remedies, general approach to treating patients etc. However, Bach’s remedies still included hazardous organisms to treat the disease and that’s why he continued with the studies. He was willing to find pure natural decision.

The long research and work resulted with the outstanding discovery. 38 Bach flower essences are now used all over the world not only to treat psychical diseases but also in the clinical practice. Rescue Remedy is extremely popular and helpful in the emergency situations. It’s very simple to carry a bottle with the dilution with you in case of any accident.
Take care and enjoy the treatment!

This is a book by an author who practiced what he preached. Wattles lived most of his life in poverty but worked his way to great wealth. Wattles practiced the technique of creative visualization and, as his daughter Florence related, ” He saw himself as a successful writer, a personality of power, an advancing man, and he began to work toward the realization of this vision. He wrote almost constantly. It was then that he formed his mental picture. He lived every page. His life was truly the powerful life.”

User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars Mixed review
Although I enjoyed this book overall, a few unrealistic aspects of the story bothered me. Romy, the main character, and her off-and-on lover, Augustine, went to grade school together at the turn of the last century. Although Augustine, an African American, attended a white school, an almost unheard of feat in those days, the author hardly mentions that this is an unusual phenomenon. Also, without proper preservation , it is unlikely that one of Romy’s prized possessions, a box that her great (etc) grand mother made nearly four hundred years ago has not disintegrated. Also, is not realistic that people believe Romy, a half Italian and half run-of-the-mill American, is black. I am one hundred percent of Italian decent, have dark features, and rather “wiry” hair, and, although I can pass for many other ethnicities, I doubt I could pass for African American. Finally, Romy’s personality was the most unrealistic aspect of the book. The reader can’t get into her head, never knows exactly why she acts the way she does and why she doesn’t do one of the two things she most desires (I don’t want to spoil the book!).

But, if you are looking for a quick summer read, and are willing to leave some common sense at the door, this is a good choice. The chemistry between Romy and Augustine is nearly palpable, their love seems very real…but why, despite the scope of their love, is their relationship so rocky?

4 Stars A wonderful read, but I have one small bone to pick….
I read “A Collection of Beauties” last week and loved it, so I immediately picked this one from my TO READ pile – I devoured it in two nights and one lunch break….How does she do it, how can she know SO MUCH about human nature? I swear she must have gone to school for psychology, or she is the most profund listener/observer of people. What I like about her writing is that her characters are hopelessly flawed, but they are true to themselves. Even the not-so-nice characters have something likeable or at least humorous about them, except Polly – I got so mad every time she showed up, she was always the catalyst for Romy’s flight from Augustine and his irrational obsession with her kept them apart for so long! There are so many different personalities in her books that you’re bound to identify with someone. The one thing I really didn’t like about the book was how she wrapped up Giulietta’s story – I wanted to know more about her, her father and the artists of her day and wish she’d spent more time on her story, letting us see what happens through her eyes. I also wanted to see what actually happened with Michelangelo – was he enraged like Giulietta thought he would be, did she tell him her secret? Perhaps we are supposed to imagine that it happened as Giulietta predicted, but I wanted to see for myself! That’s the only reason this book got four stars instead of five.

2 Stars anticlimactic
The ending to this book left me feeling that something great had been started, and lost track of partway through the journey.

I picked this book up with no clue as to what it was about (the back cover gives no hints), but was intrigued by the title, and what I saw when I glanced at a few pages.

Early on, we’re provided with back-story some generations prior to the main story of would-be artist Romy, her ambitions and meanderings, and romance with more successful artist Augustine. This back-story follows Romy’s ancestor, Giulietta, living in the time of Michaelangelo, and is quite fascinating. Yet, Otto fails to properly return to Giulietta later on in the book. Instead, we end up focussing mostly on Romy (who I found a good bit less intriguing, perhaps because she’s the same thing as Giulietta, but less fresh the second time around). Giulietta’s life is wrapped up in an incredibly meagre referenace late on in the book, so insignificant I nearly missed it when I sneezed.

For such an intriguing title, I was left feeling like ‘The Passion Dream Book’ was little more than a needlessly extended love story with some interesting art history tossed for good measure. I enjoyed the journey in places, but ultimately left feeling gypped.

5 Stars a beautiful journey
I wish I had a copy of this book to give to all my artist friends. I’ve heard it is out of print and I am at a loss at to why. Is it because the creative journey is unimportant to most? Not only is Otto’s writing poetic, the lives of the characters she creates are poetry in themselves — flawed and struggling, but earnestly seeking to discover their place in the world, and in a world that seems to not embrace the artists that gives it character and meaning.

5 Stars A book to read again and again…
I have read this book over and over again and each time I take away something different. It is the type of book that lets you see something about your own life each time you read it. If you are into art you will enjoy picking out the real life artists that she has woven in to her story. I love the little biographies in the middle of the book, it is a wonderful celebration of artists as real people and not just their most famous work. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has the soul of an artist.

ONE of the commonest of the criticisms which are brought against the mystics is that they represent an unsocial type, of religion; that their spiritual enthusiasms are personal and individual, and that they do not share or value the corporate life and institutions of the church or community to which they belong.christian mysticism And as a matter of fact, the relation that does and should exist between personal religion and the corporate life of the church frequently appears in them in a peculiarly intense, a peculiarly interesting form; and in their lives, perhaps, more easily than elsewhere, we may discern the principles which do or should govern the relation of the individual to the community.definition of mysticism

In the true mystic, who is so often and so wrongly called a “religious individualist:’ we see personal religion raised to its highest power. If we believe his account is true, it means he has had an interaction with the spiritual side of things and and is aware of it. which transcends the normal experience, and appears to be independent of the general religious consciousness of the community to which he belongs. A mystic talks to God as one human being to another, and not as a spokesman for his tribe. He survives by an immediate knowledge far greater than by belief; by a knowledge possessed in the hours of direct, uninterrupted intercourse with the Transcendent, which he calls ‘an union with God’.The certainty then gained – a certitude which he cannot explain or share, and which is not generally diffused – governs all his reactions to the Universe around him. Even in his darkest times when he loses his entire sense of spiritual reality, it still continues to support him.

Such a personality as this seems at first sight to stand in little need of the support which the smaller nature, the more languid religious consciousness, receives from the corporate spirit. But even so, the term ‘mystic’ alone indicates a certain aloofness from the majority, suggesting that he holds a secret that the community together does not and cannot share and that he lives at levels to which they cannot rise.we indicate a certain aloofness from the crowd, suggest that he is in possession of a secret which the community as a whole does not and cannot share; that he lives at levels to which they cannot rise. I think that much of the distrust with which he is often regarded comes from this sense of his independence of the herd; his apparent separation from the often clumsy and always symbolic methods of institutional religion, and the further fact that his own methods and results cannot be criticized or checked by those who have not shared them. “I spake as I saw,” said David; and those who did not see can only preserve a respectful or an exasperated silence.

Yet this common opinion that the mystic is a lonely soul wholly absorbed in his vertical relation with God, that his form of religious life represents an opposition to, and an implicit criticism of, the corporate and institutional form of religious life; this is decisively contradicted by history, which shows us, again and again, the great mystics as the loyal children of the great religious institutions, and forces us to admit that here as in other departments of human activity the corporate and the individual life are intimately plaited together. Although there are those who have managed to escape the churches that they were raised in, many of them ended up attracting others who viewed them as powerful or insightful leaders and leading them to become the centers of their own new groups. Surely, therefore, it is worth while to examine, if we can, the nature of the connection between these two factors: to ask, on the one hand, what it is that the corporate life and the group consciousness which it develops give the mystic; on the other, what is the real value of the mystic to the corporate life of his church?
